LIBEREC/TURNOV ENGLISH WEEKEND

As a follow-up to English Camp and our English conversation groups with the youth from Liberec and Turnov, 35 of us spent a weekend together in a primitive country cottage in western Czech from November 30th to December 2nd. Aretta Zitta and her co-leader Sally joined us with a team of 4 teens from their MCYM ministry on the American military base at Vilsek, Germany. (see September 2007 for the blog on last summer's English Camp.) Our students were joined by some of their friends and siblings. The youth actually seemed to enjoy speaking only English as we enjoyed many activities and games together. We only had 2 outdoor games, as it was very cold with snow on the ground. Again, the youth leaders from Liberec and Turnov did an excellent job in planning the event, including preparing all the meals. Not an easy task from an inferior kitchen without hot water! There was quality time to share life and our Christian faith with our yet-to-believe friends.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING LIBEREC

After weeks of preparation, we had our largest Thanksgiving meal on November 21, 2007 in Liberec. There were 80 guests: friends and family of members of the church. About 70% were non-believers, many visiting a church sponsored activity for the first time. We were delighted to see that several of our students came and two brought a parent which we met for the first time. It seemed like the whole church was involved: there were teams for set-up, cooking, serving and clean up. Ken helped plan and prepare the meal, and Linda planned a 40 minute slide presentation on the history and traditions of Thanksgiving. We used 3 kitchens and stoves that were in the church building, each on a different floor. At the end of the evening, many had rubbery legs from going up and down the stairs. But it was well worth the effort. It was a memorable way to reach our community with God's love and share that we are thankful to Him for His many blessings.

Ken displays the whole, roasted and stuffed turkey to the 80 guests at our Liberec Thanksgiving Meal.

Our youth pastor, Martin Vlasak, translated for Linda's slidepresentation on the history and present day activities of Thanksgiving. Most people never knew that American Thanksgiving has Christian roots that pre-date and influenced the founding of our country.

We invited our students to come to our Thanksgiving dinner. It was the first time 3 of the students attended any of our events outside the classroom: Tereza and Tereza in foreround and Eva in the background. All were able to meet and talk with our youth pastor, Martin, on the left.
